Highlights of DHHR-coordinated efforts to address the SUD crisis include the following (as of December 31, 2022):
- Treatment Beds: Started at 197, now at 1,341
- Certified Recovery Beds: 1,427
- Quick Response Teams: 38 counties/communities
- Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion Programs: 31
- SUD education provided by all three medical schools to more than 1,000 clinicians and professionals
- Collegiate Recovery Programs: 9 campuses
- 11 harm reduction programs with 1,665 referrals to treatment
- Naloxone: Provided more than 91,416 kits
- 14 Family Treatment Courts
- 46 Adult Treatment Courts
- 25 Juvenile Treatment Courts
- 192 MOUD Outpatient Treatment Providers
- MAT in all 10 regional jails
- The Creating Recovery Employment AFA awarded $2 million in grants across nine organizations in WV creating more than 75 jobs for individuals in recovery
- A contract with Faces and Voices of Recovery was initiated to establish WV's first seven Recovery Community Organizations (RCOs) in 2023
- 23 Emergency Departments have implemented SUD response programs that include screening, access to a peer recovery support specialist, and connection to treatment including MOUD induction
- Local Community Overdose Spike Response Planning was established with ODCP Regional Coordinators to create overdose spike warnings and response plans through predictive modeling
- Developed the WV Naloxone Guide for School Nurses to provide emergency information protocols in schools for accessing and administering naloxone
- Developed the WV Naloxone Guide for Emergency Shelters and created statewide training for staff on harm reduction, naloxone, and de-escalation/intervention tactics
